Phnam Bagley Tests the Future

An Interview with Phnam Bagley, co-founder of Nonfiction Studio

She called in from Austin, where she was juggling hiring for her design studio, Nonfiction.

“I think you’re my fifth meeting already,” she said.

I understood immediately.

The conversation burned through an hour in what felt like minutes, moving from Calvin and Hobbes to brain implants to human survival in hostile environments. Space, specifically.

Most design discourse runs on speculation. Slick renders and high-fidelity concepts. Debates about what could be.

Phnam does things a little differently.

Present her with the wilder futures floating through the technology sector and she does not soften. She asks who is paying for the tooling. Who is building the team. How the thing survives the rigor and constraint of manufacturing.

She does not bite on ideas: she puts them to the test.

“I’ve rarely met someone who doesn’t have good or noble ideas,” she says. “But very few know how to build the right team, raise the right amount of money, and push wild ideas all the way through development.”

Phnam Bagley is the founder of Nonfiction Design Studio, a team specializing in what she calls “transformative technology”: devices that enhance human health, performance, and longevity. She is also the architect behind Orbital Hospital, a 60-person multidisciplinary consortium designing healthcare infrastructure for space. Born in France and trained in space architecture in Houston, she spent twelve years in consumer product design before returning to space with a manufacturing discipline that most of the industry lacks.

In her practice, an idea is unfinished until it has a bill of materials, stable logistics, and a path to manufacturing tooling. Until then, it is still a hallucination. It isn’t yet real.

That discipline was built over twelve years of industrial manufacturing: more than a hundred launched consumer products across snowboarding gear, medical devices, high-end electronics, and other hard goods. It is the rigor required when the systems you build need to survive a journey to the living room, to the ski lodge and down the mountain, to the human body, and eventually, off the planet.

When you design brain implants or space habitats, the speculative trap is dangerous.

In space, design flaws can be catastrophic.

In cyborg discourse, the academic reflex is metaphor. Haraway’s political boundary collapse. McLuhan’s cognitive prosthetics. The integrated human-machine system as ideological sandbox.

Allow me a quick selfish tangent, but the word cyborg began as an engineering requirement.

It was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline in a paper titled “Cyborgs and Space.” They were trying to solve a concrete problem for NASA: how to keep a human body alive in an environment that wants to destroy it.

Their proposal was to modify the human biologically and technologically. They wanted to avoid massive artificial Earth-born chambers. They integrated the human directly into the mechanical loops of the vehicle.

Six and a half decades later, Phnam Bagley is still working inside that original problem. Just… with a more practical perspective.

As the head of Orbital Hospital, a sixty-person multidisciplinary consortium of space doctors, life-support engineers, policy makers, and designers, she is drafting the literal infrastructure of off-world survival. It is the same problem Clynes and Kline were sketching. While her premise is not to alter human biology, like them, she starts from the human.

“Everyone talks about a space economy,” Phnam says. “But there is no space economy until we send more people into space, and there’s no way to send more people into space until it’s safer.”

The legacy of space architecture is outside-in. Machines are engineered first. The rocket. The pressure vessel. The fuel tanks. The life-support scrubbers.

Once the metal structure is calculated, the human is fitted into the remaining volume like a fragile component expected to survive transit.

There is no doubt that the International Space Station is a triumph of engineering, but it was designed as a laboratory. It is a machine humans endure.

Phnam’s work flips the axis.

She designs from the inside out.

“How do we design space architecture not from the outside in, but from the inside out?” she asks. “There are many different systems at play. My cardiac system, my hormonal system, my circadian system. They all work in harmony. How do I have all of that data inform the environment so the environment can actually support me?”

To design from the inside out is to treat the habitat as an extension of the human nervous system.

On the moon, the environment is grayscale. The visual system receives no chromatic signal. To counter this, Phnam worked on “Color on the Moon,” designing lighting and textures that mimic Earth’s natural circadian triggers.

Circadian signaling is biological infrastructure. Without it, the hormonal loop breaks, sleep fails. Cognition degrades.

The machine must speak the language of the body.

The transition from consumer product designer to space architect was not linear.

After graduating in 2006 with one of the only graduate degrees in space architecture in the world, one of four people globally to receive it that year, she found the industry stalled. The space shuttle programs were winding down. The commercial space economy did not yet exist.

She stepped away.

For twelve years, she worked in consumer industrial design. Snowboarding gear. Golf clubs. Computers. Audio systems. Medical devices.

She lived in factories. She argued with mechanical engineers. She learned what happens when a drawing on a screen meets a CNC mill or an injection molding press.

“Most design studios are incredible at making things look good, but they don’t know how to push an idea all the way through manufacturing,” she says. “Apparently, a lot of designers don’t even go to factories or talk to engineers.”

This is the make-it-pretty trap.

It is the division of labor that treats design as cosmetic. In consumer tech, that error produces a product that breaks, ships late, or never ships at all.

In neurotechnology and spaceflight, it becomes systemic failure.

When she returned to the space industry five years into running Nonfiction, she brought manufacturing discipline with her. She was no longer interested in speculative concepts that would never leave the screen.

This is where her language claims the territory.

I had to ask her about the word cyborg.

“The idea of a cyborg, I think we have to embrace it where it’s necessary,” she says, talking about the convergence of biotechnology and mechanical intervention. “And we have to put brakes and policies in place when one is being abused.”

There is no distance in her tone. She does not treat the cyborg as future shock or science-fiction residue. She discusses brain interfaces and life-support integration with the same practical gravity she uses for headphones.

The universal version of the cyborg claim, that anyone with an iPhone or laptop is already in the loop, can feel thin beside her work.

But the gradient is real.

Phnam works at the hard edge, where the interface crosses the skin and the exoskeleton becomes life support.

When she was twelve years old, she received two books from an American cousin: her first English-language texts.

One was Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.

The other was a collection of Calvin and Hobbes comics.

“In many ways, these two books created the canvas of who I would become as a person,” she says. “This love of the immensely small and immensely large. Explaining very complex concepts in ways that can be understood by the average person. And then Calvin and Hobbes, a story of how to relate to life when you are a little bit different, with the filter of this sarcastic tiger around you.”

The combination is exact.

The scale of the cosmos, paired with a small boy and a stuffed tiger navigating the immediate world. It is the throughline of her career: holding the infinite scale of space architecture in one hand, and the human sensory system in the other.

To survive in extreme environments, she returns regularly to places stripped of noise.

An avid traveler, having traveled to an astounding seventeen countries in the last two years, she lived in an analog research habitat near the North Pole, isolated with a crew of four. She spends time in deserts. She works with indigenous communities in northern Australia, West Africa, and northern Canada.

“There is a lot of wisdom from the past, and incredible technology from the future, that I like to link together. The more you know about those two things, the more you realize they are the same thing.”

Deserts, arctic wastes, and low-Earth orbit are demanding in the same way. They are spaces that do not naturally support human life. Survival in them requires a deep, ritual understanding of how the body interacts with scarcity.

The oldest surviving human knowledge systems and the most advanced space lifepods are both answers to pressure.

Both are attempts to design a survivable relationship with a hostile world.

Phnam’s work exists at the intersection of the most honest design challenges: spaces and systems that do not naturally support human life, where cosmetic errors carry consequences measured in more than user satisfaction scores.

You can follow Orbital Hospital through Osmed, the Organization for Space Medicine, Engineering, and Design, where members can join twice-weekly design workshops around space healthcare infrastructure. Nonfiction documents its transformative technology work at nonfiction.design, where the same manufacturing discipline moves from consumer electronics into brain interfaces, life-support systems, and tools for hostile environments.

In a field that often treats the cyborg condition as theory, Phnam works the original engineering problem. She designs the literal integration of human and machine survival systems.

She builds the tools that keep us alive where the world does not intend to.
