At DDX NYC1, design leaders from Target, Google, edenspiekermann, Nielsen Norman, and elsewhere converged on a single hard truth. The organic edge where actual bodies and systems meet design intent is the only place design can begin. Constraint is specification.
Design has always been animated by a lie: we design for ideals. The ideal user. The ideal context. The ideal body. This fiction structures how we think about constraints. We frame them as obstacles. But the actual body interferes. The actual system complicates the elegant model.
Three speakers at DDX NYC 20262 converged on a principle: the organic edge is the starting point. The only place design can actually begin.
An organization that designs for accessible interfaces learns what its systems actually are. It discovers what bodies actually do. It builds infrastructure that works at the boundary, where friction is real and unavoidable. When accessibility becomes organizational efficiency, the frame shifts. The constraint becomes internal. It becomes generative.

The Body and Its Context
Victoria’s Case: Accessibility as Infrastructure
Victoria Bull, Head of Customer Experience at Fable, arrived at a deceptively simple premise: accessibility is a foundation. When you design for the full range of human bodies and minds, you reveal the complexity that was always there. You build for actual use.
At Target, one of the case studies Victoria points to, accessibility constraints are not compliance checkboxes. They are operating specifications. A customer who is blind or has low vision is not an edge case. They are part of the specification set. When you design for them, you build interfaces that work for everyone.
The constraint is precision. It is clarity about what a system is designed to do.
Target didn’t retrofit accessibility after building self-checkout. They embedded blind and low-vision users at the design stage, before the interface existed. The outcome: one of the first truly accessible checkout experiences, setting the retail standard, and interfaces that worked better for every guest, not just the ones the redesign was built for.

Distance and Presence
Marianna’s Frame: Building for Actual Collaboration
Marianna Wickman, Director of User Experience at Google, came to DDX NYC with a different constraint: distance. How do humans actually collaborate when they are not in the same room?
This is the working condition of design teams across the globe. The architecture of presence across distance is the architecture of modern work.
Marianna’s research on Google Beam revealed that presence is not philosophical. It is physical. It is cognitive. Interpersonal distance, high-resolution micro-cues, spatial consistency, eye contact. Zoom’s grid misses these, which is why conversations over video slip into the start-stammer of people talking over each other.
The fix Marianna’s team built is industrial, not just digital: a custom desk and a positioned middle wall designed to naturally hide the bottom of people and set the proper distance. Beam itself works more like a window than a screen. Lifesize, spatial audio, no wearables. Roughly ten years of research, 13 lab studies, 59 surveys, 30,000 participants, went into finding what presence actually requires.

Patrick Esteves, Experience Lead at edenspiekermann and Co-Founder of Fire and Forge Studios, arrived with a different constraint: latency. His studio builds a multiplayer game running four distinct AI roles inside the same world. Narrator. NPC. Challenger. Observer. Each optimized for a different job, each running under a hard rule: players won’t wait for a large model to think.
We are not building Mickey. We’re building Disneyland.” One polished character is a different problem than an ecosystem where every character, environment, and player interacts in real time. A generalist model that reasons beautifully but responds slowly loses to a smaller, faster one every time a player can quit and start the next game.
Patrick’s team tested the hard limit directly. They ran the four-AI system on the MSI Claw 7, a handheld gaming device, not a high-end rig. Constraint as design philosophy: if it runs on the weakest hardware, it runs everywhere.
